Brave Father Online: Our Story of Final Fantasy XIV (2019) – English Review

A young man living at home with his parents and sister tries to reconnect with his father. Each time they are in the same room, the two of them become uncomfortable and they don’t talk to each other.

His father has always worked a lot, and the best moment this young man had with his father was when they played Final Fantasy together when he was a young boy. Now the son is trying to reconnect with his father, and he buys Final Fantasy XIV which can be played online. What the father doesn’t know is that the son is always close to him when he plays the game, and the son tries to get closer to his father through this game. But there is something strange going on with his father. He is, as usual, enclosed, but he seems more depressed and weird than usual. What is he hiding?

Brave Father Online: Our Story of Final Fantasy XIV is based on a television series I have zero knowledge of. On paper, the story in this movie seems pretty silly, but the story managed to grab me and I liked the movie. I expected the worst, but the storytelling is very good with this strange concept.

This is a heartwarming movie that’s charming. When the characters in the movie play the game it’s as interesting as when we follow them in real life. The only thing I didn’t really like was that we never got to see the other players in this online group in real life.

But I think the relationship between father and son became a bit unreal. They live together, but they can’t talk to each other in a normal way. None of the characters seem like bad people. They mostly seem upbeat, and the son in the house has a good job. This isn’t a deep movie with deep characters. The characters are charming, and they feel more like movie characters than real people.

Games can make you relax and transport you to another world. And it’s a sort of therapy for very many people in a tough life situation. That’s what I got from Brave Father Online: Our Story of Final Fantasy XIV, although the movie also tries to reconnect father and son. I bought the therapy part, but I didn’t quite buy how the father and son reconnected again playing the game.
