Burning (2018) – English Review

A man meets a woman he knew when he was young, and he falls in love with her and he has sex with her. He has to look after this woman’s cat because she is going to Africa. When she returns from the trip, she has met a handsome man that has lots of money and she forgets the relationship they had started. But there’s something strange about her new man.

Burning is directed by Chang-dong Lee (Peppermint Candy, Oasis), and in one of the lead roles, we find Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) himself. I actually didn’t think it was him, but it was and he is very good and creepy in Burning.

It’s hard to review a movie like Burning as it changes completely when the woman returns from her vacation trip. Although the movie is slow, it’s very engaging in the last act as the protagonist begins to find out more about the strange and rich man.

I would like to call Steven Yeun the star of the movie. He is outstanding in this role as a charming man. I didn’t think he could act as well as he does in this movie.

Burning is a good movie, but I got a little problem with the protagonist which I didn’t quite like. He is poor, his new rival is successful and rich. The protagonist is an enclosed and boring man who is very simple. Not that there is anything wrong with that in reality. But when you watch a movie that offers bigger surprises in the last act, then you should cheer for him. But I didn’t quite manage to do that because he is so boring.

The ending is good and a bit open, but I was clear in my conclusion when the end credits appeared on the screen.
