Impetigore (2019) – English Review

A young woman travels back to a small village where she has inherited a house. But it turns out that the village is cursed, and the young woman is an important key to stopping the curse.

Impetigore is directed by Joko Anwar, the man behind Satan’s Slaves (2017). It was a decent movie, but I was disappointed with it since so many people said it was so good. I expected much more than what I got to see and experience. So now I had lowered my expectations when I was going to watch Impetigore.

And I liked Impetigore much more than Satan’s Slaves. This is a movie that’s slow and it takes its time building up the atmosphere. It makes you feel that there’s something creepy about this village and that the villagers are some disgusting and barbaric people.

Few people are killed in the movie, and there’s not much blood and gore here either. But from the little we see, it makes an impression when someone is killed. And you feel it fits perfectly with the atmosphere that the movie has created.

Fortunately, the movie doesn’t have as many cheap jump scares. There are some ghost children here, but they don’t show up much and they only show up once when they change the outcome of the plot a little.

I haven’t played Resident Evil 4 much, but I got the feeling of that game when I watched Impetigore. The visual look of the movie took me back to Resident Evil 4.

The universe is small, and the movie keeps its secrets hidden for a very long time. When the big revelation came, it didn’t knock me back in my chair. The movie is brilliant until it gathers together all the loose threads. Unfortunately, we get to see some strange and comedic scenes in the last minutes. And please, stop using ghost children. They are never scary!

I don’t want to say that the movie completely falls apart at the seams in the last act, but it’s not far off. I especially laughed at the bad tribute to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It’s so bad! And what happens with the leaders of the village is a Greek tragedy that will make you laugh and shake your head in despair. Until then, this has been a wonderful horror movie that takes it easy and concentrates on building up the atmosphere and creating a depressing and tense atmosphere.

Impetigore has a good story, and the atmosphere is great. But the big climax is disappointing. The buildup is so good, but Impetigore doesn’t put the ball in the net. It creates too much involuntary comedy in the last minutes with the choices it makes.
