Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) – English Review

War and love.

We’re in the middle of the Korean War, and a small group of soldiers from both sides end up in a small isolated village that never has had visitors before. And they also have another visitor, a pilot from the allied forces who are hurt. The villagers don’t know what weapons are, and they don’t know that there is a bloody war in their own country. But reality will soon come knocking on their door.

Welcome to Dongmakgol is a fantastic movie that brings together people who are taught to hate each other. Now they must learn to stand together and fight a common battle.

We follow a small group of soldiers from South and North Korea who arrive at the small village of Dongmakgol by chance. Their first reaction when they meet is hatred, and they try constantly to solve their problems with the threat of violence. But the more time they spend together in the village, the closer they get to each other and discover that they have a lot in common. And war sucks!

Welcome to Dongmakgol has great actors, and you get engrossed in these characters and their daily chores. It starts as a war movie, and it ends as a war movie. But Welcome to Dongmakgol also offers comedy, drama, and a wonderful, warm story.

My favorite scene is the scene with the wild boar. In this scene, we witness great cinematic art. Everything works perfectly in this scene. The music, the visuals and good actors with funny facial expressions.

Everything is so beautiful in Welcome to Dongmakgol. The camera movement and costumes are top-notch. Visually, Welcome to Dongmakgol is a vibrant movie that feels alive.

The ending is sad but still beautiful. You will laugh and smile when the soldiers say they are the allied forces from Korea. And when you think of it, they are right! And in that sentence, you find the meaning and the message Welcome to Dongmakgol conveys.

Welcome to Dongmakgol was one of the best movies released in 2005, and it’s a movie that hasn’t received the status it deserves. It’s so good, and it will stay with you for a long, long time after watching it.
