Bad Genius (2017) – English Review

An academically gifted girl discovers she can earn money by helping others cheat during exams.

This is an entertaining movie that offers a variety of elements I haven’t quite seen in other movies. The movie aims to be playful and has a twinkle in its eye, but towards the end, you suddenly feel like you’re watching a sort of slasher movie where the protagonist is pursued by a creepy individual who looks like a lover of children.

The best part of “Bad Genius” is witnessing the cheating that takes place during the exams. At that point, “Bad Genius” transforms into a thriller that provides a lot of suspense and unease as the protagonist assists others in cheating during various exams. We’re treated to some intense and nerve-wracking scenes that you typically find in good thriller movies. It’s truly impressive!

The characters we follow come from different classes; some are poor, some come from working-class backgrounds, and others are wealthy and privileged. This cheating scheme particularly affects a character who doesn’t have the strongest mental resilience, and you feel sorry for this character because he hasn’t done much wrong. The question then becomes whether he’ll be able to handle the pressure that comes when he’s also implicated.

One aspect of the movie that I didn’t quite enjoy is the protagonist, who comes across as unsympathetic and arrogant. She’s not what one would call a likable character; in fact, I was actually hoping she would get caught because she doesn’t come across as sympathetic in my eyes.

There’s a hint of a potential remake of “Bad Genius,” and it wouldn’t be surprising if Hollywood decides to create a movie based on this story. Regarding the ending, I feel that it didn’t quite come together as it should have. There were many unresolved aspects, and what we do see mainly focuses on the consequences for the two central characters and how their choices may have ruined much of their future – which is sad considering how intelligent they are. But money is money, especially when you don’t have much of anything else.
