The Last 10 Years (2022) – English Review

A young woman who is dying of an incurable lung disease falls in love with a young man who is depressed. The problem is that she will live 10 years if she’s lucky, and she never tells him she is dying. But soon, the day will come to tell him the truth.

The Last 10 Years is directed by Michihito Fujii, who directed Day and Night and Yakuza and the Family. I enjoyed both movies, especially Day and Night.

Most of us have watched a lot of movies with people who are dying of incurable diseases. I don’t know why I still watch these movies since they don’t offer anything new. I hate those fake, polished disease movies, and I can certainly say that The Last 10 Years isn’t a polished movie. And the reason for that is the outstanding acting. You feel you are following normal people who are struggling with depression and loss of hope. It’s especially hard to follow the young woman who God must hate.

The Last 10 Years is based on a book with the same name written by a person who had an incurable disease. I don’t know anything more than that.

The Last 10 Years is a sad movie, and I didn’t feel that the poor young woman could do anything meaningful except give her love for a short time to a depressed man who, early in the movie, tries to commit suicide. That is of course important, but man, life is so unfair. If there exists a God, he or she is a cruel person! There’s no meaning to this at all, so stop saying that! Seek help and get a brain scan!

I was so impressed by Nana Komatsu, who played a crazy character in the excellent, The World of Kanako. Kentarô Sakaguchi also deserves a lot of praise for his quiet and sensitive acting. And the chemistry between them is excellent.

This is an actor’s movie where there is no disgusting overacting. The actors behave and show emotions in a natural way. If you don’t get a lump in your throat while watching this movie, you are either clinically dead, or you are dead inside, and you need a brain scan. Something is wrong with you!
