A movie within a movie.
A movie director is going to remake his father’s most popular movie. His father was a legendary director, but his family holds a secret that could destroy his father’s legacy. He finds the perfect actress to play the lead role, but the problem is that she is terminally ill and doesn’t have much time left. Still, he takes the risk, hoping she will survive the filming, and they try to keep it a secret. But as we all know, secrets eventually find a crack and leak out. On top of that, he starts falling in love with her.
Our Movie is a South Korean romantic drama series consisting of 12 episodes. It’s a drama filled with tears and emotions, and for the most part, it works perfectly. But like many South Korean series, Our Movie should have been two episodes shorter. Some scenes drag out, hurting the pacing, and at times it feels repetitive, as if you’ve already seen certain moments multiple times throughout the 12 episodes.
The series focuses on the director who is trying to remake a movie that his father directed and wrote. But his mother also played a big part in it, though the world doesn’t know about that. He himself has made one movie, which was well received, but he’s a complicated man. He previously had a relationship with one of South Korea’s most popular actresses, but it ended in scandal when it was revealed that he had cheated on her.
The woman he meets is terminally ill and doesn’t have long left. Her mother died of the same disease, and her father, who is a doctor, cannot find a cure to save her. As a father, he wants her to remain in the hospital so he can keep an eye on her, but she longs to break free, live a normal life, and pursue her dream of becoming an actress—a dream she has had since childhood. But her time is running out, and by choosing to star in the movie, she risks hurting a lot of people.
We follow these characters during the filming and in their private lives, where drama always follows them. It’s not just on the set—the drama is nonstop, fueled by the secret the woman carries and the growing love between her and the director. People on set notice the chemistry between them, and there are a couple of women who stir up trouble, especially one who is jealous of her. They were once school friends, but now she acts like a menace. The other woman is one of South Korea’s most popular actresses and the director’s ex-girlfriend, the one he cheated on. But she doesn’t come across as a bad person—just broken by the industry, feeling as if she has lost her soul and meaning in the name of acting.
If you like emotional dramas with solid acting, especially between the two protagonists, Our Movie is a series worth watching because it will warm your heart. You will learn about the movie industry, meet a disgusting and clueless investor you’ll end up hating, and watch selfish people with a tin heart grow a real one again because of the love between the movie director and the terminally ill woman. You’ll like some of the characters, hate others, and root for the two protagonists, who are likable and truly need each other. Their time together will be short, but their love for each other will be eternal.
