Midnight Sun (2006) – English Review

[midnight sun

She’s not a vampire!

A girl who isn’t a vampire can’t go out when the sun is up, so she has to stay home when most people are at school or work. From her window, she sees a boy at the bus stop who enjoys surfing every day, and he meets his friends early in the morning to catch some waves. The girl goes out at night, where she finds a spot and sings. She’s a songwriter and singer, but she doesn’t have an audience. But then one night, she sees the boy she’s in love with, and her new adventure begins.

I remember I loved this movie when it came out, and it’s still a cute movie. The girl is allergic to the sun, and if UV rays get in contact with her skin, she might die.

Yui, who plays the girl, is charming. She’s a real musician, and she sings some catchy songs. The problem is that in the first hour, Midnight Sun sometimes feels like a promotion movie for her music. I didn’t get that feeling the first time when I watched the movie, but this time it became obvious.

I have never watched the Hollywood remake of Midnight Sun, and I will never watch it. What’s the point when the original is pretty good, and you get to visit Japan?

Yui isn’t the best actress, and this was her first and last movie. But she’s cute, and she uses that to her advantage. The other actors are excellent, especially Takashi Tsukamoto, who plays the boy, and Gorô Kishitani, who plays the girl’s father. They carry most of the movie on their shoulders.

The last hour is better than the first hour when the drama takes over. The funniest scene is when the girl introduces herself to the boy for the first time when she pushes him to the ground and tells him about herself. She hasn’t learned how to communicate with boys since she has been isolated from the outside world because of her illness. That scene is so cute and funny.

This is a cute and sad movie. You feel so sorry for the girl who has done nothing wrong, and you feel especially sorry for her dad in the last 30 minutes when he starts to question himself over his choices and what the hell his daughter has done wrong to deserve a destiny like this. It’s a movie that will leave you with a lump in your throat. Life is so unfair for many, so if you are healthy, appreciate that and don’t take it for granted.
