Zombies!
The king’s son discovers that something strange is going on in the kingdom, and he’s not allowed to see his father. It turns out that the king has died, but someone gave him a medicine that turned him into a zombie. Some evil people are looking to take over the kingdom, but the king’s son stands in the way and now he’s accused of treason. The king’s son and his faithful bodyguard are trying to find out the truth, and what they will discover is frightening, to say the least.
The first season of Kingdom consists of only 6 episodes. There will probably be more seasons, because the first season builds up the small universe it has with the central characters in the series.
There is focus on politics, action, and zombies. What disappointed me the most were the villains in the series who are one-dimensional. They are just power-hungry, that’s all and it gets boring. It hadn’t hurt with more layers and character depth.
The good thing about the series is that it offers beautiful, visual scenes and energy when the zombie’s attacks. Fortunately, these are not the slow zombies from most zombie movies. These are zombies that are more like those in 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, even though they were not zombies in those movies. But the zombies in Kingdom are running, so it’s not hard to see where Kingdom got its inspiration from.
You also get a kind of feeling that the zombies in Kingdom are also partially vampires. They don’t like sunlight, they hide when the sun rises and rise when the sun goes down. But, there’s one but here, and that’s all I have to say.
I never felt that the central characters in Kingdom were in grave danger, which is a major weakness. The characters in the series are not deep characters, they are very simple characters that don’t have many layers. That’s why I couldn’t care so much about them. I must have deeper characters with more character depth than this.
Even with only 6 episodes, a lot gets done here introducing the central characters while focusing on suspense and action. That said, what is most disappointing are the villains in the series that are stereotypical villains without much character depth. Otherwise, this is a solid season that never gets boring and that offers atmospheric scenes and beautiful cinematography.
