Love knows no boundaries.
A rather stupid man falls in love with a woman who turns out to be a ghost, and she works for an evil man-lady that she doesn’t like. She wants to be a free woman. So the stupid man must try to help her, but then he must first defeat the evil master that controls her.
A Chinese Ghost Story is considered to be a Hong Kong classic. The movie mixes action, romance, comedy, and ghosts. You rarely see this type of movie, and A Chinese Ghost Story stands out in the crowd to this date.
The actors deliver solid role interpretations, especially Leslie Cheung is charming as the ignorant and unfortunate bill collector who falls in love with a ghost. And Joey Wong is always a cutie. I have always been in love with her since she was young and beautiful!
I cannot give A Chinese Ghost Story 10/10. The problem is that the movie has too many balls in the air, and the runtime is too short. Had the runtime been around 150 minutes, they could have focused more on the love story and given more screen time to the evil ghosts. But the older Hong Kong movies were always in a hurry, and A Chinese Ghost Story is no exception.
The villains in the movie get too little screen time. I love the tree demon with the fun mix of a man’s and a woman’s voice. He always makes me smile with his crazy voice.
A Chinese Ghost Story is too short for me to call it a classic. It’s a good movie, but the humor can be terrible. When the protagonist is in town, have some embarrassing scenes that aren’t funny. And many of the special effects have not withstood the test of time. But it’s a charming movie that all Asian movie fans must watch.
