Two friends who work as pedicab drivers meet some women they fall in love with, and one of them has a dirty job but a heart of gold. However, she works for a cruel man who isn’t happy if some of his so-called employees leave their job behind.
The difference between Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan as directors and martial arts choreographers is that Sammo Hung is more brutal than Jackie Chan. I prefer Sammo Hung and his style when it comes to martial arts, but as a storyteller, Sammo Hung has something to learn from the man with the big nose, Jackie Chan. Sammo Hung is too cruel sometimes, and the things that happen toward the end of the movie are just too cruel and unnecessary. Come on, man!
Don’t go into this movie expecting a lot of fighting. Pedicab Driver focuses a lot on the love story between Sammo Hung and the hottie, Nina Li Chi, and his best friend in the movie, who falls in love with the woman with a heart of gold with a dirty job.
And again, I have to complain about the harshness of this movie when it turns out that one of the friends knows what the woman is hiding, and the whole group ends up scolding her while she just sits there. It’s so cruel and disturbing! As if they are so much better than her with their small peabrains!
There are two really solid fight scenes in the movie. The fight between Sammo Hung and Lau Kar-leung is fantastic, and the same can be said about the last, long fight sequence when Sammo Hung must fight against a lot of men and the bad man himself, Billy Chow. I love Billy Chow. He has that typical face you want to punch hard in the face, but it would end up with him knocking you out since he is Billy Chow!
Pedicab Driver is a good and entertaining movie. It has a cute story to tell, but that cute story gets destroyed when Sammo Hung turns into Darth Vader. The fight scenes are excellent, especially if you like Sammo Hung and his style. The only thing I have never been a big fan of is that Sammo Hung likes to zoom in too much, unlike Jackie Chan, who shows us body movements from head to toe when he is fighting. But Sammo Hung delivers much more hard-hitting action choreography.
