Tezuka’s Barbara (2019) – English Review

Barbara!

A popular and burnt-out author meets a wild woman who likes to drink and party. He becomes morbidly obsessed with her, and the question is whether this will end well for the author. He has women around him who are very interested in him. But he only sees Barbara, who’s the woman he wants! But first, he must tame her!

Oh, Barbara! You hot woman! Show me your boobs, and kick me in the balls so I can hear my bells ring! Ding dong, ding dong! After that, you can strangle me, and it won’t end there! I will always love you, Barbara! Dead or alive, I will make love to you! I love you, Barbara! BARBARA!

I have no knowledge of the manga. As a movie, this isn’t exactly an engaging movie. We find my favorite actress Fumi Nikaido in the role of Barabara. She takes off her clothes, so that’s nice for the perverted bastards out there. Don’t look at me! I have always been a big fan of her, with clothes on actually! Not that there’s anything wrong with her body or anything, but I also appreciate other things! I have a life, you know!

Tezuka’s Barbara is a surreal movie that’s a little difficult to grasp. Is the author going insane? Does Barbara really exist? Is the author gay? Why is there no one else around the author who can see Barbara? Who’s the strange sect and Barbara’s mother? What’s up with the voodoo dolls? What’s happening? And can anyone kill the band that plays the fucking jazz shit! Kick them in the balls so they never can play that jazz-shit again!

I had many questions, but I didn’t feel the movie gave me any great answers. But you get the impression that the protagonist has become insane. But Barbara, is she real?

I don’t want to call Tezuka’s Barbara a boring movie as it has some strange scenes that I liked. But it’s not an engaging movie as the author is an unsympathetic character, and the movie feels very cold.

You don’t like any of the central characters in the movie when they are so self-absorbed. But Fumi Nikaido brings a lot of life to the character she plays, and it’s she who must carry the movie with her mysterious character and boobs. But this is only a movie for those who are particularly interested in strange movies or who have knowledge of the manga. Or for those who want to dream of Fumi Nikaido’s boobs. Oh, Barbara!
