Bacurau (2019) – English Review

A small village in Brazil isn’t so happy with a corrupt politician. But then someone starts killing them. So what are they going to do, and who wishes them dead? Do I smell some white devils?

This was a strange movie that I’m sure Brazilian people will understand more of the smaller details better than outsiders. Maybe there are a few things here I didn’t notice. Things I picked up were corruption and white devils who love firearms, and Americans who have a drone that looks like a UFO. And they settle down in another country and do as they please. They kill innocent people just for fun.

At first, Bacurau feels like a western movie where the movie introduces the central characters. It doesn’t take long before a corrupt politician shows up in town. Then some of the townspeople are killed, and it turns out that white devils are behind the killings. But why are they here, and who do they work for?

But the villagers stand together. And they are brutal when they have had enough of the white devils! So we get to see some short but very graphic scenes when it’s time for payback. So that’s good!

There’s a lot of satire here, and I liked the strange atmosphere that took me back to watching a weird western movie. I see and understand that Bacurau, isn’t a movie for everyone. It’s a special movie, and I think it’s a movie for viewers who have seen and like weird movies after losing too many brain cells after watching too many stupid popcorn movies. I guess I’m one of them, but I feel my brain cells are growing back. Don’t you agree?
