Following (2024) – English Review

I want the spotlight!

A real estate agent who is a pervert—since he likes to break into people’s homes without doing anything special except sort of helping them out—discovers one day that a woman who was his client has been murdered in her apartment after he entered it without her permission. He didn’t kill her, but someone is trying to frame him, and now he is on the run from the police while trying to find the real perpetrator.

Following is a movie that focuses on the dark side of social media and what people are willing to do to get easy money without doing any real work. People are stupid, and you can smell the stupidity when you watch streamers and the ridiculous audience that gives them money. Some people are even willing to harm animals and do crazy things to get donations. I hate professional beggars, and there are so many of them on YouTube and Twitch. Just because you make some videos doesn’t mean you deserve money, you stupid idiots!

The plot is, for the most part, predictable. I knew the movie would offer a twist, and I guessed that twist early. It’s all about secrets, social media, and so-called influencers—their real side that many people don’t see through. I don’t mean that every influencer is a crook, but there are plenty of fake ones who are just out for your hard-earned money. Please don’t be one of those stupid idiots.

So the protagonist runs around trying to dig into someone’s past to figure out what’s going on and if he has done anything wrong in the past that could haunt him now. But you know he won’t find much. The reason he got into trouble is pretty funny and fitting since he’s a disturbed pervert who doesn’t quite understand that breaking into people’s homes—just to see how they live and maybe give them a helping hand without them knowing—is wrong. He’s definitely a weirdo, but he isn’t a dangerous man.

Following doesn’t offer anything new, but the second half of the movie is entertaining and pretty funny because of how true it feels when it comes to messed-up influencers who should take a trip behind the barn and get what’s coming to them.

If you’re a fan of Shin Hye-sun, which I’ve become, you should watch this movie. In the first half, she doesn’t get much screen time, but there’s a reason for that. After that, she shines, and I feel she’s still an underrated actress. She has so much talent, but she’s also starred in movies that, for the most part, don’t make it out of South Korea to hit international markets. That’s a shame because this actress deserves a lot more attention.
