Handsome Guys (2024) – English Review

Too handsome to die.

Two handsome men who are half-brothers have bought an old house out in the woods. But since they are so handsome, they frighten other people, and there is a group of youngsters nearby who believe that the two handsome men are murderers. Then bad things start happening to the youngsters, because they die one after the other, since they are idiots, and the two handsome men are innocent. But it is not easy for the two handsome men when people attack them and then end up killing themselves. But that is not the only problem that awaits them, because they need Ash from the Evil Dead to come and help them, since there is something demonic hidden in the cellar.

Handsome Guys is a remake of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, a fun movie that I loved when it came out. This South Korean remake follows the original movie up to a point, but then it completely changes genre and becomes an Evil Dead clone. I am not sure why they did it, but I guess it has something to do with South Koreans loving demons and possessions. But putting Evil Dead into a remake of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil could have been dropped, to be honest, since the original movie is so charming. The remake is also charming, but it has some problems.

My biggest issue with the movie is that it feels like it is in a hurry to end the storyline of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, so it can cram in Evil Dead towards the end, which makes it a mess. It is not bad, but as I mentioned, the change of genres does not fully work here.

The original movie is pretty slow when it comes to building up the characters and the situations where the youngsters end up killing themselves because they are so stupid. Handsome Guys is much more in a hurry, and even though it is a charming movie and I laughed several times, I wish it could have spent more time building up the youngsters and spending more time on their chemistry and dialogue when they flip out. Some of the kill scenes should have better buildups than the ones in Handsome Guys, because they feel rushed compared to the original movie.

When Handsome Guys decides to go the Evil Dead route, there are about 25 minutes left of the movie, if I remember correctly. It takes a while before it gets entertaining, but the scenes, and especially the last 10 minutes, have a lot of charm, even though the demon is quite uninteresting and not frightening. So that was a disappointment, but we still have the human characters and their fight against the evil demon, and they have pretty good chemistry between them.

I think this movie works better for a South Korean audience. The problem with us Westerners and movie nerds is that we have seen Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, and we have, of course, seen the Evil Dead movies many times. So there is not much we can get out of this movie, while I guess a South Korean audience will find it more entertaining and wild because of the mix of these two movies, especially if they have not seen either of them. I also got the feeling that most of the South Korean audience has not watched the original Tucker and Dale vs. Evil that Handsome Guys is based on, so they will not miss what we fans of the original miss when watching Handsome Guys.
