Innocent Witness (2019) aka Witness – English Review

An autistic girl witnessed a man either being killed or taking his own life one night. She sees this from her bedroom window. They charge the maid of the deceased man with murder, and her defense attorney tries to get closer to the autistic girl. This will be the start of a special friendship between these two.

Innocent Witness is a sweet movie, but it’s also a slightly stupid movie. There are many plot holes here regarding the trial, not least the lousy police investigation. This becomes frustrating because I realized very early on what had happened to the man who the prosecution believes was killed by his maid.

You don’t need to have seen many crime movies to understand the motive, so I wouldn’t call Innocent Witness a good crime movie. It will give you a headache if you concentrate too much on the trial and all the stupidity we see and hear in the courtroom.

The motive, what is the motive? Who does the police usually suspect when an elderly person is murdered in their own home? Maybe the police and prosecution should check what was going on in his life before he died. What kind of fools are investigating this case? This is just crazy!

But it’s a good movie about a special bond of friendship between the defense attorney and the autistic girl. It’s interesting to see the small steps the defense attorney must take to win her trust, which is not easy.

He must familiarize himself with her situation and learn what autism is. The movie also spends time on the subject of being different and being stigmatized without people bothering to spend some time understanding why things are the way they are. It’s so easy to judge others because of ignorance.

Kim Hyang-gi who plays the autistic girl is brilliant. She shines in this role. She oozes warmth and charm that will make you feel good inside. Jung Woo-sung is always good and charming when he smiles with his warm smile. And his eyes tell a lot without him having to say anything.

Innocent Witness can be an annoying movie with the nonsense that takes place in the courtroom because it doesn’t feel realistic at all. But the movie has a lot of charm and two solid actors who deliver the goods.

Rating: 6/10
