The Blood of Wolves (2018) – English Review

A young cop teams up with an older cop to prevent a Yakuza war between two clans.

In ‘The Blood of Wolves,’ we follow a young cop who is trying to understand the workings of the Yakuza underworld. His partner is an expert on the Yakuza, but it turns out that he’s corrupt. Consequently, he’s not the role model the young man should be looking up to. Two Yakuza clans hold a deep-seated grudge against each other, and they are on the brink of going to war. The older cop is determined to prevent this conflict while also trying to locate a missing man who could create problems for one of the Yakuza clans.

‘The Blood of Wolves’ is a compelling and highly entertaining crime movie with a few humorous scenes. I loved the part where the young cop unintentionally discovers the item they are searching for after knocking out his mentor.

The movie also contains some violence, with a few graphic scenes that, while not numerous, are quite impactful.

The Yakuza members are portrayed as angry and violent, and it’s amusing to see them exaggerate their behavior due to their Yakuza affiliations. They come across as somewhat childish in their actions and aren’t portrayed as intelligent men. But their ruthlessness adds to their entertainment value.

‘The Blood of Wolves’ presents an intriguing world where the characters can’t trust anyone but themselves. The young cop initially sees the world in black and white, but as he follows his corrupt mentor, he begins to realize that there are many shades of gray in the corrupt world they inhabit.

Overall, ‘The Blood of Wolves’ is one of the better modern Yakuza movies I’ve seen in the last decade. I’ve noticed that there’s a sequel to the movie that I need to check out.
