To Kill with Intrigue (1977) – English Review

Watch out for the bees!

A young man with an enormous nose sees his parents getting killed by a mysterious woman. Now she has kidnapped him too, and she intends to make his life miserable. Who is she, and what does she want? And can he trust his friend who looks after his girlfriend?

The idiot Lo Wei directed To Kill with Intrigue. This is a movie I feel is one of the best movies he made when working with Jackie Chan. The movie has an interesting atmosphere. You get the feeling of seeing something supernatural, and the woman who has kidnapped the protagonist is an interesting character.

But then Lo Wei turns it around again in the third and final act when he comes up with an idiotic twist that tries to shock the viewers. Let me put it this way: Lo Wei is not a mystery man. He’s an idiot, and I can’t bear to overload my brain to put the pieces in the right place. You will just get a colossal headache!

The fight scenes are decent enough, although punches and kicks again lack power. But when the characters jump high into the air, and they are performing some somersaults, Lo Wei loses control of his ugly editing. Especially the last fight sequence takes the cake with some terrible editing straight from hell, where Lo Wei is now as we speak. It feels like you are watching somersault after somersault for 30 seconds in a row!

To Kill with Intrigue is not a chore. It’s interesting to follow the insane woman who falls in love with the man she tortures and whom she doesn’t want to let go. But the protagonist will not let go of his girlfriend, whom his friend protects. But is he an actual friend?
