Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin (1978) – English Review

Eight martial arts masters have disappeared, and they had in their possession a book that many people are searching for. And they will walk over corpses to get their hands on this powerful book!

The problem with the movie is a dull script and fight scenes that lack energy. The movie will make you sit and yawn in your chair of boredom. One should be mentally tough and prepared to see many of the first movies Jackie Chan starred in, especially the movies from the ‘70s. The movies are repetitive, the fight scenes are long, and they lack energy.

Jackie Chan was in charge of the choreography in this movie, something that’s noticeable. Everything is too tidy, it’s boring to watch. Jackie Chan got better in the 80s, but as all fans know, it wasn’t until Sammo Hung, and Yuen Woo-ping choreographed the fight scenes that Jackie Chan showed us what was waiting to come out. When he’s in charge of the choreography, it’s nice to look at, but the fight scenes lack energy and drama. But he got much better in the ‘80s.

Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin has a generic story, boring and annoying characters, and fight scenes that can make you fall asleep. These movies make so little sense. They are virtually useless. I had to pause the movie four times. It has some acceptable fight scenes early in the movie, and the showdown between the protagonist and the main villain is also acceptable. But you always see that kicks and punches are held back too much, and that destroys the energy and credibility during the fights.
