The Quiet Family (1998) – English Review

We don’t need more guests! Where are we going to hide all the corpses?

A family buys a mountain lodge, and they think they can live off this business. But then they need to keep the guests alive, and that’s easier said than done. Because the guests always die, and that’s bad for business.

The Quiet Family was Kim Ji-woon’s first feature movie. He already sets a high standard with this movie that he later became known for. And when he has cast Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-sik in the same movie, I’m in heaven. What a cast!

Takashi Miike also made a remake of The Quiet Family, named The Happiness of the Katakuris. I’m not a big fan of that movie, but I know many are.

Comedy with a big dose of black humor is the ingredient in The Quiet Family. This dysfunctional family has really bad luck when all of their guests die. It starts with a suicide, then the family loses control, and they become masters at burying dead guests. But after a while, the police knocks on their door, and they flip out even more.

The Quiet Family is not visually the prettiest movie that Kim Ji-woon has made. But you can see the shape of a movie he later made, A Tale of Two Sisters (2004). I recognized some of the camera work. The soundtrack is good. It consists of popular music that works well.

There aren’t many movies like The Quiet Family. It’s a very special movie that you can watch over and over again. The Quiet Family is a wild movie about a family that loses control, and it’s so funny to follow this dysfunctional family on their journey! They can remind me of The Adams Family. Especially the youngest girl in the family could be a member of The Adams Family!
