Tiger on the Beat 2 (1990) – English Review

Where is Chow Yun Fat when we need him?

A prostitute steals a ring that belongs to some drug dealers, and now they want the ring back. But the prostitute meets a stupid gorilla man who has an uncle who is a cop, and she’s trying to convince them that her life is in danger. But why should they care about the selfish prostitute who only thinks of herself? Well, she’s got one thing going for her. She’s that typical cute Hong Kong prostitute woman we all fall in love with. You want to pick up your Hong Kong cutie prostitute woman and carry her into the sunset, finding the nearest bed where you can cuddle with your Hong Kong cutie prostitute woman.

Tiger on the Beat 2 doesn’t feel much like a sequel to the original movie starring Chow Yun Fat and Conan Lee. The gorilla man Conan Lee doesn’t play a cop in the sequel. He plays an idiot like he did in the first movie, but in Tiger on the Beat 2, he doesn’t have a single brain cell. However, he loves to help a prostitute woman who is a criminal, but there’s no chemistry between them because it’s impossible to create chemistry on-screen with the human gorilla who looks ridiculous trying to act like Jackie Chan. The man can hardly move at all. He kicks like he’s a 90-year-old man with two hip replacements, and it doesn’t help that he has no charisma. But the prostitute, played by Ellen Chan, is a cutie like most Hong Kong prostitute women were in the ’80s and ’90s before they disappeared. They were just too cute!

Even though the runtime is just around 90 minutes, this is a really slow-paced movie, and it’s nowhere near as entertaining as the first one. It’s slow-paced because the characters are poorly written, and they have no chemistry. It’s hard to follow the gorilla man and his peanut of a brain, and you’ll also grow tired of Roy Cheung and how easily he escapes the law, even when his plans fail time after time. He is so useless and annoying because he shows up everywhere trying to kill the hot prostitute, but usually, his plans backfire.

The action scenes aren’t great. There are a lot of quick cuts, and as I mentioned, it’s painful to watch Conan Lee trying to be acrobatic. The best scene with this idiot is early in the movie when a stuntman hits the pavement hard after losing his grip, it seems. Danny Lee has replaced Chow Yun Fat, and I don’t have any problems with Danny Lee. He’s trying his best, but he’s handicapped by having to play the uncle of the gorilla man, Conan Lee.

If you liked the original movie, there’s absolutely no reason I can give you to watch Tiger on the Beat 2. The script is trash, the characters are all incompetent, and the movie isn’t funny, even though the gorilla man tries to charm us with his stupidity and lack of charisma.
