Amsterdamned (1988) – English Review

Amsterdam is currently being terrorized by a diver who’s randomly killing people. Who is this diver, and what’s driving him or her?

I distinctly remember watching “Amsterdamned” many times during my childhood. I rented the movie multiple times on VHS, and it’s been around 25 years since I last saw it. So, it was time to revisit it again.

What’s special about “Amsterdamned” is that it’s a sort of mix between a slasher and “Jaws,” set in the canals of Amsterdam.

The whole concept is absurd, but the movie manages to entertain and engage with its peculiar characters and a serial killer who always seems to be underwater. The guy doesn’t need oxygen; he’s willing to wait underwater for hours in a specific scene, and you can’t quite figure out why. It all becomes ridiculous, yet highly entertaining.

Besides the serial killer, the best part of the movie is a lengthy boat chase that impressed me. It’s a boat chase that looks quite dangerous, and I must say, I was impressed that they dared to shoot this extended sequence. There are several situations here that could have killed someone.

What you’ll find in “Amsterdamned” is a somewhat unique atmosphere with absurd and poorly-written characters, and a charming movie if you enjoy proper B-movies that make you shake your head at all the idiocy you see on the screen. It’s nauseating to see someone diving in the dirty canals of Amsterdam. I was just waiting for the person who emerged from the water to be covered in used condoms and ugly prostitutes. Yuck, Amsterdam is a city I don’t like!
