Pet Sematary (2019) – English Review

The scary pet cemetery.

Happiness doesn’t last long when the cat in the family is run over and killed. But it doesn’t take long before it returns from the dead. And the cat isn’t the only one who wakes up from eternal sleep.

Surprise surprise, Stephen King is once again popular after the success of It and Castle Rock. Usually, it doesn’t take long before he’s forgotten again, and Pet Sematary is the start of it. When they milk novels and earlier movies based on Stephen King’s works, they kill his name for about 10-15 years before trying again on making new remakes or novels that haven’t turned into movies or TV series.

The original movie has never been a masterpiece, and I can say the same thing about the novel. I’ve never been a big fan of the original movie or the novel. When I was a teenager, I was a big fan of Stephen King. I have read many of his best novels, and I’ve seen most of the movies and TV series adaptations.

So, as you probably understand, Pet Cemetery has never impressed me, and the 2019 remake doesn’t change that view. It’s just more of the same. Seen it before and better. I have never bought the concept when the characters are so stupid and poorly written.

The protagonist is warned several times, but he has to break all the rules. Is it that hard to understand that you don’t play with death when you see how the cat is behaving? Also, there is no chemistry between the actors. The chemistry is as dead as the rest of the movie.

What we are witnessing is poor storytelling, low suspense, stupid choices, and bad acting. If you have seen the original movie, there’s not much new to see here. Except for the terrible ending. What were they thinking?

Pet Sematary isn’t a good movie. It’s a type of horror movie that wants to scare the viewers too much, but it doesn’t succeed at all. I would say that the original movie has far more charm than this silly attempt that doesn’t succeed with what it’s trying to do. It’s not a scary experience, and even though the movie has a dark atmosphere, it doesn’t engage with the bad script and the actors that have no chemistry.
