Triangle of Sadness (2022) – English Review

We follow a couple who are on a cruise for the rich, but maybe they should have stayed at home.

Movie lovers should know who the director behind this movie is. Ruben Östlund loves to make satirical movies, and Triangle of Sadness is no exception. I loved his previous movies, Tourist (2014) and The Square (2017). So, this is a director who takes his time when making movies. He writes and directs his movies brilliantly.

A young couple, both models, is experiencing some problems in their relationship. They decide to take a break and relax on a luxury cruise with rich and eccentric people.

The movie offers a lot of satirical social commentary, and I loved the long sequence when the passengers cannot handle the waves while eating disgusting food. This awesome and nauseating sequence made me laugh so hard.

While watching the first and second acts, I felt like I was watching a twisted Wes Anderson movie. The characters and the stupid situations they end up in transported me to that universe, which is a sign of quality. But Ruben Östlund’s movies are much smarter, and they have something important to say about the world we live in, in a really entertaining way. He is such a unique director.

The runtime is around 150 minutes, but it doesn’t feel that long. The last act may be a little slow, but after a short while, the third act wakes up when an unexpected character takes command, which is quite funny and disturbing when we see what happens towards the end.

Triangle of Sadness is a quality movie that will make you laugh. The story and the characters will hook you, and the movie won’t let you go until it is finished. It’s one of the few movies lately that has captured my full attention while watching it.
