Magical Girl (2014) – English Review

magical-girl

The dress and the wand.

A father has a daughter who’s dying of leukemia, and he needs money to buy a dress and a wand for his daughter. But he’s unemployed, and he’s depressed and desperate. One night he meets a woman with mental problems, and they sleep together. He films them having sex, and he blackmails the woman because he knows her husband has money. But the woman must take care of her own business, so she gets in touch with an old friend who can help her find a job. That’s not something she wants to do, but she needs the money, and her body is the only thing that can get rid of this man. That will have severe consequences.

Magical Girl is a Spanish movie that burns slowly. This isn’t a movie for the restless. If you are looking for a quality movie about the consequences that follow when a father tries to make his daughter happy, then this is a movie I highly recommend. He’s a selfish man who doesn’t think about what can happen to others just because he wants to make his dying daughter happy. You can understand him, but when you see what the woman must go through to get the money he wants from her, I ended up hating him.

We follow three people who all have their problems. The former teacher has a dying daughter. The woman has mental problems with her dark past, and the old man is afraid when he’s released from prison. These three people and stories interconnect. And if you are patient, you will get rewarded. This is a dark and gritty movie that took me by surprise.

Many will say that the ending of Magical Girl isn’t that shocking because European movies are not like movies from Hollywood. But come on, you just have to see it for yourself to see what I mean. There’s one scene that’s disturbing and sad.
