After a tsunami kills the family of a young girl, a man adopts her. The problem is that the girl falls in love with the man, which is a big no-no.
The first time I watched My Man, I wasn’t that impressed by the movie. I gave it a 6/10, and I guess it wasn’t the right movie for me to watch seven years ago.
But I have always wanted to give the movie a second chance because both of my favorite Japanese actors star in it and they both have the leading roles. I’m talking about Tadanobu Asano and Fumi Nikaido. They are extremely talented actors who never care about the big money. They pick interesting roles and also take on roles that many actors wouldn’t have touched. These are brave actors who want to be the best that they can be and challenge themselves. So, respect them, or get a fist planted in your stupid face!
In the movie, we follow a young girl who lost one or both of her parents or her whole family when the town was hit by a tsunami. A man shows up, and the movie tells us that he is a relative of the young girl, but I’m not quite sure about that. Either he is a relative, or he kidnapped the young girl. But she grows up with him, and they have a special bond. The girl is so in love with him, and that will lead to problems.
As I said, the acting is brilliant in My Man. It’s not just the acting; the atmosphere and the cinematography are beautiful, and the subject matter is interesting. You will feel dirty after watching My Man, and that’s fine. But this is a really solid movie that tells us a different love story that you won’t experience often, especially with two extremely talented actors.
The movie burns slowly, but even if it burns slowly, there are a lot of things going on here between the characters. Fumi Nikaido is a master at playing a creepy and dysfunctional character. The scenes with her and the father’s girlfriend are brilliant, and the young girl scared me. And that is because of the acting talent that Fumi Nikaido possesses.
And the thing they are doing with their fingers is something I will never forget. This is a movie about fingers in the mouth, and it’s so creepy when they do it the first time. And the insane scene with the young man is awesome. I am not going to spoil anything, but there is a scene towards the end of the movie that belongs in a sick serial killer movie. This scene is fantastic!
If you want to watch a different take on a forbidden love story, My Man is a movie you should watch if you appreciate fantastic acting and an interesting story. It’s a love story, a murder story, a story about getting lost, and when you didn’t think one of the characters could sink any deeper than he already has, he just goes further and further down to the endless bottom that is waiting for him.
