Rewatch: Sex Is Zero (2002) – English Review

Students at a University are having fun. They party hard, but not all of them will be happy forever.

Sex Is Zero is one of the most popular and well-known comedies from South Korea. The movie was made in the golden era of South Korean cinema. There’s something special about the movies they made from 2001 to 2006.

If you are going to compare Sex Is Zero against similar movies, the first movie you would think of is American Pie. I like some of the American Pie movies, but Sex Is Zero has funnier scenes. I also like the actors in Sex Is Zero more than the actors in American Pie. Seann William Scott is the actor who carries the torch in the American Pie movies.

Sex Is Zero has one of the funniest scenes in this genre when the buddies of the protagonist are trying to catch a mouse, and they make the sickest and most disgusting sandwich you can think of. And then the protagonist enters the room, and he’s hungry, so he eats the sandwich while his buddies try to snatch the sandwich away from him. He ends up in the hospital. This scene is golden! The movie has other scenes that are crazy fun as well. So this movie has many more memorable scenes than the first American Pie movie.

I have watched this movie several times, and what I discovered now was the story. The protagonist is in love with the hottest hottie at school. He is always there for her, but the love he is giving her isn’t given back.

The first hour is funny and charming, and the women are hot! But the last 30 minutes are terrible. The melodrama knocks you out, and it’s time for abortion and an aerobic contest. These two elements derail the plot and what we saw and experienced in the first hour. I always want to cry when the movie changes genres out of nowhere. Welcome to South Korea! But on the positive side, we see again how great a person the protagonist is, even though he looks like he’s 45 years old. Old fart!

Sex Is Zero will always have a special place in my heart. It was one of the first South Korean comedy movies I watched, together with the best movie of all time, My Sassy Girl (2001). It’s such a fun and charming movie, but the last half hour will always be a big problem.
