Time Renegades (2016) – English Review

A teacher from the past and a cop from the present get a connection when they dream. And now they must try to stop a serial killer who will hurt the women they love. Can the cop in the present help the school teacher in the past? And what happens if they play with events that have happened? As we all know, you don’t play with time, time plays with you!

I almost turned off the entire movie after only fifteen minutes. I didn’t quite know what I was seeing, and what I saw in the first fifteen minutes was not what I call top quality. It smelled so cheap, and I also didn’t like the way they filmed the actors with a bright light. I thought they were in heaven, for god’s sake! The male teacher’s hair also annoyed me. Look at that ugly hair!

Then I had to check out why I wanted to see this movie, and I got the answer when I saw who had directed the movie. The director is Kwak Jae-young, the man who has made some of the best romantic movies ever made. He’s made the best movie of all time, My Sassy Girl. And if you don’t agree with that, then I will find you and fuck you up! He’s also made movies such as Windstruck and The Classic. I’ve almost seen all of his movies, so I gave him a chance after those awful first fifteen minutes.

Time Renegades becomes a better movie after the terrible opening that can make corpses turn in their graves. Suddenly, the movie engages with its story as we follow the teacher and the cop who’s trying to stop the serial killer. But it’s difficult, even though the schoolteacher in the past gets help in his dreams from the cop who’s sitting on information that can help him track down the serial killer.

The pace increases. A lot happens and you feel sympathy for both characters we follow as they are so in love. But here comes also a problem. The romance isn’t exactly what I call deep. It’s superficial, but okay, it works because at least I got engaged with the story. I wanted them to stop the evil serial killer. This is primarily a suspense movie that doesn’t build deep relationships between the central characters.

If you like crime and mystery, then Time Renegades may be worth watching if you survive the brutal and nauseating opening. But the very last scene where the movie comes with a twist didn’t work. I was throwing up in my mouth, it’s a cheap ending. Kwak Jae-young never quite knows when he should stop, and he proves it again with Time Renegades.
