Waterboys (2001) – English Review

waterboys.jpg

Five students start learning synchronized swimming at school, and they will perform at a school festival. But the road is full of obstacles, and most of the students laugh at them, and they don’t take them seriously.

Waterboys is a Japanese comedy movie that will get you in an excellent mood. When I bought this movie many years ago, I reacted with disgust when I opened up the envelope and saw the picture on the cover. But I gave the movie a chance. And I’ve probably seen Waterboys six times so far, and it’s just as good every single time I watch it. It’s a simple movie, but it oozes charm, and you can see that the actors were having fun.

The movie is directed by Shinobu Yaguchi. If you like the Waterboys, you should check out his other movies that all have one thing in common. They ooze charm and warmth! But Waterboys is his great masterpiece.

The main characters of the movie consist of five boys who all have strong and different personalities. The funniest character is the gay boy. I love the sequence with this character when he was young, and he’s sending clear signals that he’s interested in one of the boys on the team.

The funniest scene in the movie is when the five boys are performing for the first time. Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. The music and choreography in this scene are fantastic, and I laughed as hard now as I did when I watched the movie for the first time.

Give Waterboys a chance. Waterboys is a movie out of the ordinary, and you will rarely experience such a charming movie. Waterboys is a movie you watch on rainy days. It’s a movie that will lighten up your mood. This is one of the best comedies made in the sports genre, if not the best alongside Shaolin Soccer.
